Sherrone Moore is out as the head coach at the University of Michigan. On Wednesday, U-M announced that Moore was fired over allegedly engaging in an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
“Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” the university said in a statement, according to CNN. “This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
U-M added that Moore’s conduct “constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
The University of Michigan hired Sherrone Moore as head football coach in 2024
Moore joined the Wolverines in 2024 after working six years as offensive coordinator. Moore, who replaced head football coach Jim Harbaugh at that time, became the first Black head coach in the program’s history, according to CNN.
Moore served as the acting head coach while Harbaugh served two suspensions in 2023 — one for recruiting violations and the other for sign-stealing accusations. Moore led the team to three key victories at the end of the season before Harbaugh came back for the playoffs and led Michigan to the national title.
In January 2024, Harbaugh joined the NFL to serve as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, allowing Moore to take his place at U-M.
Sherrone Moore’s first year as Michigan’s head football coach was rocky
U-M went 8-5 in Moore’s first year as head coach, which was their worst record since 2017, according to CBS Sports. Still, the Wolverines finished the season with wins over Ohio State and Alabama.
With the team facing higher expectations going into this past season, the Wolverines showed some signs of promise until late November, losing 27-9 to Ohio State. That loss ended up being Moore’s final game with the Wolverines. It also marked the first time Ohio State beat U-M since 2019.
